Get Involved

The Grand Rapids Democratic Socialists of America welcomes you to our organization.  We are the local chapter of a national activist group.

Attend a Chapter Meeting

The Grand Rapids Democratic Socialists of America hold a regular chapter meeting each month. We are meeting every other Sunday for our Biweekly Meeting Series. This is our big, all hands meeting. Here we introduce ourselves to our chapter, discuss strategy and set priorities, and hear report backs from officers and working groups. Take a look at the events calendar to see when our next chapter meeting is!

Attend New Member Orientation

Are you a new member of the DSA? Want to be more active in the chapter? Our Membership Team is offering New Member Orientation! Join us to learn about the DSA, our Grand Rapids chapter, how to get involved, and get to know your fellow comrades.

Check the events calendar, these will be offered at least monthly at different times and days to accommodate a range of schedules. You do not need to be a member to join, though it is encouraged that you are.

Attend a Meeting

Interested in a specific topic? Our active working groups meet regularly. Each working group and committee does different things, but collectively they make the whole of the organization! Head over to our events page to get information on working group meetings.

Our active working groups are:

  • Housing Justice Working Group
  • Labor Working Group
  • Tenant-Organizing Working Group
  • Membership Committee
  • Communications Committee
  • Campaigns Committee
  • Electoral Committee
  • Political-Education Committee
  • Steering Committee

Become a Dues-Paying Member

You do not need to be a dues-paying member to organize with the GRDSA. Becoming a member will give you voting power at our regular chapter meeting. It is also a prerequisite for joining the GRDSA’s steering committee. There are a few different payment options available. The GRDSA receives 20% of monthly dues that members in our jurisdiction provide. Don’t let your money stop you from joining! DSA offers a waiver for folks that experience financial hardship.

Become a Rosebuddy

The GRDSA strives to be a welcoming and engaging environment for individuals of every background and experience to make material change for their community. This program was spearheaded by those who wished for it to have existed when they first joined.

The Rose Buddy Program is a volunteer Mentorship style program in which experienced and active members (Mentors) are paired up with new members (Mentees) with the task of acclimating them to the Chapter in a variety of ways over a period of time. The Mentee will then “graduate” from the program once certain criteria is met. The goal is to incorporate new members into the Chapter by helping them understand the Chapter’s structure, finding where they fit in, utilizing and developing their skills, and becoming friends! This program is also an opportunity for more experienced members to take on a leadership role in the Chapter. Win win!

New members who are interested in becoming a Mentee can fill out this form: Rosebuddy Mentee Application

Experienced and active members interested in becoming a Mentor can fill out this form: Rosebuddy Mentor Application
